Tucked behind Jakhoo Hill, reaching out towards the Bharari spur of the Shim Ridge, Elysium Hill affords views of all Of Shimla spread out below. Lord Auckland chose this hill for his home, Auckland House, now a school. You'll pass by it on your way to Lakkar Bazaar. Further UP Elysium, the trek to the villages of Pabo and Kamiana gees over picturesque trails Jakhoo Hill, the tallest of the seven hills, on which sprawls central Shimla, is crowned by the Hanuman Temple. This is the hill you must climb to enjoy the sublime sunrises that Shimla offers. Church, whose silhouette can be seen for miles around as you approach Shimla, is also here. Do attend the Sunday morning service.
Tragically, elegant frescoes designed by J. Lockwood Kipling, father Rudyard end principal of Mumbai's prestigious JJ School of Art, which once graced the walls, have been destroyed and can no longer be seen, but the stained glass windows are particularly intricate here: one depicts all the seven virtues. On your way back, walk past St. Mary's Church and Rothney Castle, once home to renowned ornithologist AO Hume, who founded the Indian National Congress. |
